Hepatic Diseases

The liver is the second largest organ in the body and plays a major role in metabolism with numerous functions in the human body, including regulation of glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cellsplasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. In Ayurveda, Cirrhosis of the Liver is known as Yakrit Vriddhi. Liver is the most important organs in the human body and any disease of the liver may lead to serious problems. Cirrhosis of the liver is a chronic, degenerative disease of the liver in which there is continuous destruction and scarring of the liver cells. As the cells of the liver get destroyed they are replaced by scar tissues.

CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS AS PER AYURVEDA

Liver cirrhosis : is a chronic condition in which the liver slowly deteriorates and malfunctions due to chronic injury. Scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, partially blocking the flow of blood through the liver. Scarring also impairs the liver’s ability to :-

Control infections. Remove bacteria and toxins from the blood.
Process nutrients, hormones, and drugs. Make proteins that regulate blood clotting.

Produce bile to help absorb fats including cholesterol and fat-soluble vitamins.

The most common cause of cirrhosis of the liver is excessive use of alcohol. It harms many organs in the body but it is most harmful to the liver. A faulty and unhealthy diet is also a reason for the cause of this disease. Hepatitis B, hepatitis C and hepatitis D, drugs, toxins and infections also lead to cirrhosis of the liver. The color of the liver changes to yellow from red and it also contracts. The process of metabolism gets hampered and this results in the loss of appetite and weight. It may be followed by diarrhea, flatulence and chronic gastritis and also pain in the region of the liver. The body tends to swell up. One may also feel difficult to cough and breathe which happens because of the increased size of the liver which puts pressure on the diaphragm.

Fatty liver :. typically has no associated symptoms. You may experience fatigue or vague abdominal discomfort. Your liver may become slightly enlarged. Excess fat can cause liver inflammation. If your liver becomes inflamed, you may have a poor appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, weakness, and confusion. The most common cause of fatty liver is alcoholism and heavy drinking.

Jaundice and Hepatitis : is a yellowish discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes and white of the eyes caused by elevated levels of the chemical bilirubin in the blood (hyperbilirubinemia). Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. The condition can be self-limiting or can progress to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer. (e.g. alcohol, certain drugs), and autoimmune diseases can also cause hepatitis. There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E. These 5 types are of greatest concern because of the burden of illness and death they cause and the potential for outbreaks and epidemic spread. In particular, types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and, together, are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer.

Gallbladder stones: Gallstones are stones or lumps that develop in the gallbladder or bile duct when substances in there harden. Some of the chemicals which exist in the gallbladder, such as cholesterol, calcium bilirubinate, and calcium carbonate, solidify into either one large stone or several small ones.
